The UN World Food Programme is currently piloting a aid program based on blockchain technology and the use of biometric iris scans; “Our pilot is the largest implementation of blockchain technology for humanitarian aid in the world,” says Houman Haddad, the WFP’s head of emerging technology, to the FT; the program helps refugees to begin rebuilding their lives; they use iris scans and blockchain technology to create identity documents that are verifiable; most refugees are forced from their homes with little or no documents, these new advancements will not only help the refugees but they can also help the agencies to better serve these communities.
